Don't get me wrong...I don't hate running. I only hate it sometimes! But, I am learning to work through the wedgies, the oh so wonderful feeling of thighs rubbing together, the childlike question of "are we there yet?" and instead enjoy the scenery around me and celebrate the fact that just maybe I could do this.
Anyway. On Saturday, we went on running. We knew it was supposed to rain, but although the clouds were dark and threatening, we were making pretty good time and figured that we would make it home. About a mile from our house, the first rain drops start. "Not so bad," I thought. "It is actually kind of refreshing." Oh boy. We would have been fine, except we decided to play our "Good Samaritan" card for the day. (For me, it was really just an excuse to stop running and take a rest. I know, I know, I am SO altruistic).
We passed a house with a yard sale going on. Clearly, they did not see the weather forecast for the day. It was this little old man and woman with tables upon tables of things that they were trying to sell. It looked as though they had 40 years worth of things that they were trying to sell. We saw them trying to pack everything up, and stopped to help. It was at that point that the heavens really opened up. It was POURING! It was even kind of making my arms sting with the force it was coming down with. Trying to keep everything neat and organized went right out the window. We started grabbing whatever we could and shoving it in boxes, under tarps, etc., etc. We managed to get everything put away and Jeff and I said goodbye. After mentally giving myself the proverbially pat on the back (haha) I stopped realizing "Oh no! We are still about a mile away!"
It was ridiculous. The streets were like small streams, our shoes were squelching with every step we ran, and we were continually wiping the rain from our faces in order to even see! Let me tell you, running with clothes that are soaking wet is totally different than running when you are dry. I felt like I was 50 pounds heavier.
And yet....it was a celebratory kind of run. Cars were honking at us, fists pumped in our direction, bikers yelled out "Yeah! Hard-core!" And, as I listened to the Supremes "You Can't Hurry Love" on my iPod, tried to pull a "I do this all the time" face each time someone passed us, and then put on a last burst of speed to beat Jeff home to a steaming hot shower, I thought "Yeah! I am that hardcore."

Haha! I really love the rain, and usually love running a bit in it, but yeah, Saturday was ridiculous.
That's really cool that you may or may not be training for a half marathon, though. I'd love to run one someday, too (as soon as I get the guts to do it).
1 - I HATE running and am not afraid to admit it.
2 - So proud of you for maybe training for a half marathon...
3 - If you do the half marathon when and where will it be?
4 - I am proud of you for even considering it.
5 - You guys are such good samaritans.
6 - Proud of you for beating Jeff, although I can hear his defense all the way from here.
7 - Remind me to tell you the story about my friend that just ran a marathon in the pouring rain, good story.
8 - This comment is WAY too long, but so fun!
IF, a big IF, we do it, it will be on Aug. 29th in Logan. It's called the Top of Utah 1/2 marathon. We'll see.
Totally laughing at this post! You guys are Hard Core! LOL! But I do have to say how nice that was of you guys to help those people out.
OK you're funny, but If you guys do decide you actually want to do it then tell me and i'll do it with you! I just decided last week that it's my new goal to do one by the end of the year!
I totally understand how you feel. We are in New York for the summer and he first few days I was here it rained every day. Once, I was about 3 blocks from meeting Tagg at his office when it started to rain. By the time I got to his work I was drenched! It was raining SO hard. Good look with your training.
Hey Whitney, I'm also "training" for the Top of Utah 1/2 Marathon! Ha ha. And I'm right there with you on "Am I really going to do that?"
Hands down one of the best blogs I have read today. Props to you for doing your service for the day. There is no greater feeling... although running in the rain while everyone is cheering you on might come pretty close!
p.s. I think you should run it cause while you are in Logan you can come visit me!
I'm surprised your ipod kept working! The whole story is pretty hardcore already, even if you don't do the half. :)
Tell Jeff he needs to check out my latest updates.
Do it!! That way Jeff can claim he has really run a race. Brett's first marathon was Top of Utah. He loved it. The rain story is so funny. You are ready for the mud run!
half marathon wow! remember that running is mostly mental. That is where I fail and don't make it past mile 5, but I believe in your mental capacity so yay for you!
Sounds really fun! You guys should come out here and run the Hamptons Half Marathon with me in the fall!
My Dad ran the Top of Utah marathon & said it was really pretty. Have fun training!
