The Dreaded Botox Injections...

On December 21st, we drove Max up to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake for his Botox injections for his neck. Jeff was sweet enough to take the morning off so that he could go with us and offer moral support! Since he needed to be sedated, he wasn't allowed to eat anything past midnight. Since he usually eats around 7:30 AM and his procedure wasn't scheduled until 9, I was a little worried about how he would do. Luckily, he was a complete angel. He was so calm as all of the nurses and doctors came in to do all of the paperwork and check-ups. He just sat on our lap or lay on the bed looking all around like he was sizing everyone up! He started to get a little fussy around 9:15, but fortunately, that was when the anesthesiologist came in to get him. They had told us that I would be able to go with while he was sedated, but for some reason, it didn't end up working out that way. The anesthesiologist just picked him up and told him we'd see him in a little bit and started off down the hall. As she walked away with him, he turned back over her shoulder to look at us until the doors swung shut behind him. It was so sad to watch his little face! I'm tearing up all over again as I type it. I don't think I will ever forget that part.

The entire procedure only took about 15 minutes. We heard his weak little cry right before a nurse came to get us and take us into his room. He was still out of it and he was SO hungry. He drank his usual 5 and half ounces so fast and then kept crying for more. We fixed another bottle and he drank almost all of that. He had about 10 ounces altogether before he was finally satisfied...poor little man! We went home and Jeff put both me and Max down for a nap before heading back to work! Max was just fine after his nap.

** Update: It's been over 2 months since this procedure. The Botox worked well for a while, but now Max is beginning to tilt his head a little bit again. It's not as much of a tilt as it was beforehand, but still cause for concern. They are talking about a few different options, but we are hoping that with chiropractic care and physical therapy we will be able to overcome this and help his neck function as it should!

I can't imagine how hard that must have been to see them take him away like that. But, I'm so glad it was worth it and helped Max! I'm sorry he has to go through that and I hope he recovers with the physical therapy!
